sundarakāṁḍa.
atha ēkacatvāriṁśassargaḥ

sa ca vāgbhiḥ praśastābhiḥ gamiṣyan pūjitastayā|
tasmāddēśādapakramya ciṁtayāmāsa vānaraḥ||1||

sa|| saḥ vānaraḥ praśasthābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ pūjitaḥ tasmāt dēśāt apakramyagamiṣyan ciṁtayāmāsa||

That Vanara having been honored with choicest words, started thinking about going from that place.

alpaśēṣamidaṁ kāryaṁ dr̥ṣṭēyamasitēkṣaṇā|
trīn upāyānatikramya caturtha iha vidyatē||2||
na sāma rakṣassu guṇāya kalpatē na dānamarthōpacitēṣu yujyatē|
nabhēdasādhyā baladarpitā janāḥ parākramastvēva mamēha rōcatē||3||
na cāsya kāryasya parākramā dr̥tē viniścayaḥ kaścidihōpapadyatē|
hatapravīrāhi raṇēhi rākṣasāḥ kathaṁcidīyuryadihādya mārdavam||4||

sa|| idaṁ kāryaṁ alpaśēṣaṁ (asti)| ayaṁ asitēkṣaṇā dr̥ṣṭā| trīn upāyān atikramya iha caturtha vidyatē|| rakṣassu sāma guṇāya na kalpatē| arthōpacitēṣu dānaṁ na yujyatē| baladarpitāḥ janāḥ bhēda sādhyāḥ na | iha mama parākramastvēva rōcatē||iha asya kāryasya parākramāt r̥tē viniścayaḥ kaścit na upapadyatē| yat raṇē hatapravīrāḥ rākṣasāḥ adya iha kathaṁcit mārdavaṁ īyuḥ||

' This black eyed lady has been seen. Very little work is remaining. Beyond the three strategies here there is a fourth strategy. With Rakshasas negotiation is of no use. Being wealthy gifts also will not work. For people proud of their strength dissension will not work. Here only my valor will work. Here for this task other than valor nothing else will hold. If I kill a few strong ones they may soften and yield.

kāryē karmaṇi nirdiṣṭē yō bahūnyapi sādhayēt|
pūrvakāryāvirōdhēna sa kāryaṁ kartu marhati||5||
na hyēka sādhakō hētuḥ svalpasyāpīha karmaṇaḥ|
yōhyarthaṁ bahudhā vēda sa samarthōsrtha sādhanē||6||

sa|| kāryē karmaṇi nirdiṣṭē yaḥ pūrvakāryā virōdhēna bahūṇyapi sādhayēt saḥ kāryaṁ kartuṁ arhati|| iha svalpasya api karmaṇaḥ sārdhakaḥ hētuḥ ēkaḥ na hi | yaḥ arthaṁ bahudhā vēda saḥ arthasādhanē samarthaḥ ||

When a work is entrusted one who achieves many without affecting the earlier work is the one who is fit to do the work. Here for achieving a small task effectively there is no one way. One who knows many ways is capable.

ihaiva tāvatkr̥taniścayō hyahaṁ
yadi vrajēyaṁ plavagēśvarālayam|
parātma sammarthaviśēṣatattvavit
tataḥ kr̥taṁ syān mamabhartr̥śāsanam||7||

sa|| ahaṁ ihaiva tāvat parātmasammardaviśēṣatattvavit plavagēśvarālayaṁvrajēyaṁ yadi tataḥ mama bhartr̥ śāsanaṁ kr̥taṁ syāt ||

Here itself if I go to the abode of Vanaras after understanding the difference between the strength of the enemy forces and our strength in war, then the orders of my lord are well executed.

kathaṁ nu khalvadya bhavētsukhāgataṁ prasahya yuddhaṁ mamarākṣasaiḥ saha|
tathaiva khalvātmabalaṁ ca sāravat sammānayēnmāṁ ca raṇē daśānanaḥ||8||
tataḥ samāsādya raṇē daśānanaṁ samaṁtrivargaṁ sabalaprayāyinam|
hr̥di sthitaṁ tasya mataṁ balaṁ ca vai sukhēna matvāha mitaḥ punarvrajē||9||

sa|| adya mama rākṣasaiḥ saha prasahya yuddhaṁ kathaṁ nu sukhāgataṁ bhavēt tathaiva ātmabalaṁ ca sāravat saḥ daśānanaḥ ca mām raṇē mānayēt||tataḥ samaṁtrivargaṁ sabalaprayāyinaṁ daśānanaṁ raṇē samāsādya tasya hr̥di sthitaṁ mataṁ balaṁ caiva mattvā aham itaḥ sukhēna punaḥ vrajē||

How to engage in a war with Rakshasas today ? How to have a happy ending ? That ten ten-headed will gauge his strength and ours in that way only. Then after finding out the strength of the ten-headed with his army chiefs marching forward and his mind along with his ministers, I can happily go from here.

idamasya nr̥śaṁsasya naṁdanōpamamuttamaṁ|
vanaṁ nētramanaḥ kāṁtaṁ nānādrumalatāyutam||10||
idaṁ vidhvaṁsayiṣyāmi śuṣkaṁ vanamivānalaḥ|
asmin bhagnē tataḥ kōpaṁ kariṣyati daśānanaḥ||11||

sa|| nr̥śaṁsasya asya idaṁ nētramanaḥ krāṁtaṁ nānādrumalāyutaṁ uttamaṁ vanaṁ naṁdanōpamaṁ ||śuṣkaṁ vanaṁ analaḥ iva idaṁ vidhvaṁsayiṣyāmi| asmin bhagnē tataḥ daśānanaḥ kōpaṁ kariṣyati||

This wicked one's Ashoka grove is a feast to the eyes and mind with different kinds of trees creepers and is like the Nandana grove. Like a dried forest is destroyed by the fire, I will destroy this garden. When this is devastated the ten-headed will be angry.

tatōmahat sāśvamahārathadvipaṁ balaṁ samādēkṣyati rākṣasādhipaḥ|
triśūlakālāyasapaṭṭi sāyudham tatōmahat yuddhamidaṁ bhaviṣyati||12||
ahaṁ tu taiḥ saṁyati caṁḍavikramaiḥ samētya rakṣōbhirasahyavikramaḥ|
nihatya tadrāvaṇacōditaṁ balaṁ sukhaṁ gamiṣyāmi kapīśvarālayam||13||

sa|| tataḥ rākṣasādhipaḥ sāśvamahārathadvipaṁ mahat triśūlakālāyasapaṭṭi sāyudhaṁ balaṁ samādēkṣyati | tataḥ idaṁ mahat yuddhaṁ bhaviṣyati|| ahaṁ tu caṇḍavikramaiḥ taiḥ rakṣōbhiḥ saṁyati samētya asahyavikramaḥ rāvaṇacōditaṁ tat balaṁ nihatya sukham kapīśvarālayaṁ gamiṣyāmi||

Then the king of Rakshasas will send a great force with horses chariots and elephants armed with tridents and spears. Then a great war will ensue. Then colliding with Rakshasas of irresistible valor endowed with fierce strength sent by Ravana, and destroying them, I can go happily to the abode of Vanaras.

tatō mārutavat kruddhō mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ|
ūruvēgēna mahatā drumān kṣēptu mathārabhat||14||
tatastu hanumān vīrō babhaṁja pramadāvanaṁ|
mattadvijasamāghuṣṭaṁ nānādrumalatāyutam||15||

sa|| tataḥ bhīmavikramaḥ mārutiḥ kr̥ddhaḥ atha mahatā ūruvēgēna mārutavat drumān kṣēptuṁ ārabhat ||tataḥ vīraḥ hanumān mattadvijasamāghuṣṭaṁ nādrumalāyutaṁ pramadāvanaṁ babhaṁja||

Then the fierce warrior Maruti being furious started uprooting the trees with speed sprung from his thighs. Then Hanuman felled a variety of trees and creepers inhabited by intoxicated birds in the beautiful garden meant for women folk.

tadvanaṁ mathitairvr̥kṣaiḥ bhinaiśca salilāśayaiḥ|
cūrṇitaiḥ parvatāgraiśca babhūvā priyadarśanam||16||
nānā śakuṁtavirutaiḥ prabhinnaiḥ salilāśayaiḥ|
tāmraiḥ kisalayaiḥ klāṁtaiḥ klāṁtadrumalatāyutam||17||
na babhau tadvanaṁ tatra dāvānalahataṁ yadā|
vyākulāvaraṇā rējuḥ vihvalā iva tā latāḥ||18||
latāgr̥haiḥ citragr̥haiśca nāśitaiḥ mahōragairvyāḷa mr̥gaiśca nirdutaiḥ|
śilāgr̥hairunmadhitaiḥ tathā gr̥haiḥ praṇaṣṭarūpaṁ tadabhūnmahat vanam||19||

sa|| tat vanaṁ mathitaiḥ vr̥kṣaiḥ bhinnaiḥ salilāśayaiḥ cūrṇitaiḥ parvatāgraiśca apriyadarśanaṁ babhūva||klāṁtadrumalatāyutaṁ tat vanaṁ nanāśakuṁtavirutaiḥ prabhinnaiḥ salilāsayaiḥ klāṁtaiḥ tāmraiḥ kisalayaiḥ dāvānalahataṁraṇāḥ tāḥ latāḥ vihvalāḥ iva rējuḥ||mahat tat vanaṁ nāśitaiḥ latāgr̥haiḥ citragr̥haiḥ nirdhutaiḥ mahōragaiḥ vyālamr̥gaiścatathā unmathitaiḥ śilāgr̥haiḥ gr̥haiḥ praṇaṣṭa rūpaṁ abhūt ||

That grove with destroyed trees, breached ponds, and powdered mountain peaks became ugly looking. With wilted trees and creepers, with birds shrieking with different kinds of sounds with ponds of water breached , and with tender coppery shoots withered, the garden looked as though burnt by forest fire and climbers looked like women shivering in fear with their robes disarrayed. The great garden lay destroyed with arbors and picture galleries ruined huge serpents and animals scattered , stone houses and sheds destroyed.

sā vihvalā śōkalatāpratānā vanasthalīśōkalatāpratānā|
jātā daśāsyapramadāvanasya kapērbalāddi pramadāvanasya||20||

sa||daśāsya pramadāvanasya paramadāvanasya kapēḥ sā vanasthalī balāt vihvalā śōkalatāpratānā jātā||

The pleasure garden of Ravana totally destroyed appeared as though it was spreading the creepers of sorrow by the Vanara who set out to protect the lady.

sa tasya kr̥tārthapatērmahākapiḥ mahadvyaḷīkaṁ manasō mahātmanaḥ|
yuyutsurēkō bahubhiḥ mahābalaiḥ śriyā jvalan tōraṇamāsthitaḥ kapiḥ||21||

sa|| saḥ mahākapiḥ mahātmanaḥ tasya arthapatēḥ manasaḥ mahat vyalīkaṁ kr̥tvā mahābalaiḥ bahubhiḥ ēkaḥ yuyutsuḥ śriyājvalan tōraṇam āsthitāḥ||

The great Vanara glowing having created unpleasantness for the ruler of wealth . stood at the archway ready to fight single handedly many warriors.

ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē
caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām
śrīmatsundarakāṁḍē ēkacatvāriṁśassargaḥ ||

Thus ends Sarga forty one of Sundarakanda of Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit , by the first poet sage Valmiki
